Every July 1st new laws go into effect in Virginia.  This year, there is an exciting change in Virginia law for fans of locally brewed beer.   In my opinion (as someone who likes micro-brew beer), the law is not getting the attention it deserves given the controversial nature of other laws being enacted this July 1 (abortion, adoption, etc.).

What this new beer license law means for Virginia brewers.

Previously, under the Code of Virginia’s Alcohol Beverage Control Act rule, local breweries could only give small taste samples or sell beer for off-site consumption.  Now, under the law which just took effect, the Virginia breweries are allowed to set up tables and have people congregate while consuming the house beer.  2012 Va. ALS 619, 1.   The breweries would only be allowed to sell those brands which they produce under the licensing rules.  However, this could lead to revitalization and extra tourist dollars for thirsty travelers.  I see it as a way to open up an entirely new market in Virginia (which has some of the toughest alcohol laws in the nation).

It is important to note that new laws also went into effect which strengthen DUI penalties in Virginia.  So, when you are going to check out these breweries, don’t drink and drive!
